No, candles in a fireplace are not feminine. I have them in mine because burning wood all the time is annoying and tiresome. I've put in large, solid candles in various colors of terra cotta which are very strong and masculine looking and they're sitting in a black wrought iron candle holder that look like tree branches with no leaves. Not a frill or curly-cue in sight! Even just grouping various heights of wide, chunky candles all in the same color, would look awesome, standing all on their own. The plainer you keep it, the more masculine the effect is created. If you wanted a feminine accent with the candles, then the colors, the shape of the candles and what's surrounding them would all contribute to more of that effect. It could be either or, depending on the elements you arrange together to make either a masculine or feminine statement. Good for you Mom!

Candles in the fireplace can be very nice. For a man, I would use candles with a masculine color and are thick, weighty.
Think green candles with a pine cone surround, perhaps.
Perhaps a vanilla musk candle. You might want to visit a website like Kirklands for ideas.

Interesting point is who put the candles in the fireplace, the son or the daughter-in-law.? And just to make a point, don't be so picky. It isnt your house, so MYOB! When you are at home you can put candles where ever you want, do whatever you want and think whatever you want. Don't find fault or you might alienate him.

No! Candles that are very thick and tall are great, you didn't mention is he ws married or who put the candles there, if hes single thats even nicer, shows he has a romantic side.

Depends on the candles I guess. If they are large ones I don't think so. As long as there not little pink ones I think it's fine!

I don't think so :-)
Maybe in the warmer months he could put a nice Boston fern in there. Actually, I think it's really cool that a guy takes an interest in his space. Rather refreshing!
