Most songs are written after a personal experience. Now, many times writers assume that it has to be a tragic experience, losing a loved one, breaking up with a significant other, or getting over these experiences. Now this is not the case. Often times, upbeat songs are more popular than ballads; though they are much harder to write.
Feel free to write a song about how much you love life, or how lucky you are. (Only if that's how you feel, if not, well then, the song is probably going to come across as insincere and cheesy).
The next type of song is usually written about someone else's experience, you're telling a story. It doesn't have to be a real one- The Way by Fastball was inspired by a headline the frontman read about an elderly couple vanishing on a trip and he imagined that they went off together out of love and didn't tell anyone (In reality the elderly couple drove off a cliff in their RV). It could even be something about your friend or a celebrity. Try stepping in someone else's shoes.
You could also try writing about a political issue you feel strongly about. While these songs are often quickly dated and never seem to be popular for long, you'll find it's easy to generate lyrics on that type of thing.
Another thing people hardly ever seem to try is just writing words and sentences that SOUND good together, not because they have lyrical depth. This doesn't require any ideas at all, and while you may not be writing the next chart topper, it may inspire you to write another song around a particular string of words.

If you still haven't thought of anything try these:
-Watch TV. I swear, it works. A plot for a cheesy sitcom could become a lovely ballad.
-Surf the news and blogs.
-Reminisce about things that have happened in your past.
-Just talk to people.
-Go to a public place, just observe people and see what they do and how they act and what they talk about.

And, don't listen to music to try to get ideas. At least for, I basically end up plagiarizing whatever I was listening to and having to through it out.

Good Luck, I hope this was help.

Write what you know. The song doesn't have to be a detailed journal entry of something that has happened to you or someone you know or how you feel. But the song should derives from something you can relate to. Then from there create a song. You need to know who the song is for first after you come up with the idea. The genre, the age group, and the type of instruments you would like to hear the lyrics to will help determine how you want to stucture the lyrics. You dont actually need to have a instumental ready to sing the lyrics to but just have an idea. Goodluck

Songs are not something you can work on and learn from experience. Songs come in from your emotions.
If you play an instrument, when you play some notes it will resemble your current mood (if you try to make a melody)
If you are writing lyrics, it will start off as a poem. You can turn this into a verse or a chorus.

I write music in the form of rap, but i can also write music for songs too, my method is to think of a good topic something deep and meaningfull, then when its the right topic you just let your ideas flow out on the paper, you can write about just about anything

Write about what you know and what you feel. Don't write lyrics- write poetry. Write your emotions and experiences. The song will be better if you have actually felt the emotion you are writing about or went through what you are talking about. For example, you don't write about love if you have never been in love.

You can create a song about nature, about a friend, about a person you miss, or about your feelings. Just express anything you like when writing a song.

This is a true story ( my father told it to me long ago). It's about Hank Williams Sr. Years after he was dumped by an exgirl friend and on with his life. One day he passed by her and she was with someone else - he felt like crap.
That night he wanted to write a song about it. It all started with one line.
"Today I passed you on the street, and my heart fell at your feet.
The song is now known as " I can't help it if I'm still in love with you."

So, write what you feel and build on it just like that and you'll be fine.

When you write songs, write them from your heart. What do you feel inside? Write it out! Good Luck!
