i just wanna go on record saying that the public housing projects were going to be torn down and rebuilt BEFORE katrina, they were waiting on the funds. the protesters were not locals whatsoever, just like barry said. its silly to try and keep building that 1. was never cleaned out after katrina, 2. have been around for way too long the same way 3. were way below standard and were not up to code. and i have talked to people who used to live in some of the public housing places and every last one said to bring um down. so who are the people protesting for?

Barry gave a great answer. Affordable housing is a big problem right now in NOLA and needs to be addressed but like with the rest of the recovery effort it will take time to get these new mixed income developments built. BUT they will be much better for the city and it residents than the public housing projects could ever be. These current projects caused so many problems for the city and the people that lived in them, so why would anyone want to bring all those problems back? If you try to do things the same way you will get the same result. New Orleans has an opportunity to come back as a much better city that it was before and this is one of those opportunities to help make it happen. NOLA is a very traditional city with people set in their ways, but people will have to try new things and do something differently so it doesn't repeat its past mistakes. Tearing down this projects and replacing them with mixed income communities is one of the best things the city of New Orleans could do in the long ru to help it recover to become one of the greatest american cities as it was before.

I live in suburban New Orleans. Whoever didn't like Barry's answer doesn't understand the truth when it is stately clearly.

The projects such as St. Bernard and others SHOULD be torn down. They became a breeding ground for crime (gangs, drugs, violence). They were poorly maintained. Their plumbing was often sub-standard. Their comfort level wasn't very good. And they were not safe at night because the thugs took over the grounds.
