He didn't seem to accept my hug, why is that?

So I've had a crush on a co-worker now for a while and he knows this. He's single and we get along perfectly. Christmas break starts tomorrow so this was my last day with him, so I tell him Happy holidays and just as I was about to give him a hug I hear him say "Don't-" and move a bit but I managed to still give him a hug. He had a big smile when I let go (it was only for a few seconds), but unfortunately all the other co-workers were around him at the same time, though only one noticed and smiled while the others pretended to not see. Why did he do that, was it out of dis interest or because all the other workers were around?
