a 4 week old kitten should not be away from its mom.. so I am wondering if this is a brain problem caused by poor nutrition??? (cats shouldnt be weaned til 8 weeks of age.. but 6 is a minimum for health reasons)

it could be ear mites.. although at that young of an age they shouldnt be that bad.. if the cat has ear mites it probably needs to see a vet and get dewormed, vaccinated too...
neglecting to treat can result in deafness but if you try to clean the ears yourself you can make the problem worse...

brain damage can also cause a kitten to behave like this - was it dropped or slammed with a door?

ear mites.
Kittens get them easily and they are very easy to cure. Just take them to the vet and he will clean them out and kill the ear mites. My kitten had ear mights and she was doing the same thing your describing.

the kitten could have feline leukemia, it is deadly, get it to a vet right away.I use to run a humane society. and worked with animals, it cost alot to to get them healed, unless you have a good vet and they will work with you, but a test should only cost about 20.00, to find out for sure,

ear mites. Check inside the ear...if they have a bad smell and they have alot of black dirt inside...this may be the cause.
