Our son was 2 when we switched from whole milk to 2%, and 3 when we switched him to non-fat (all on the advice of his doctor). He continues to fall right on the 50% mark on growth charts.

Everything that I have read and what my daughter's Dr told me was to switch to 2% at 2 years old. My daughter turned 2 in September. I switched around that time. Milk is not essential for them at this age anyway. They can get all the same nutrients in other foods (if they will eat the other foods, unlike my daughter). The reason for homo milk up to the age of two is for the fat and brain development. After 2 you do have to watch fat intake a little and they don't need it for brain development.
Ask the Dr why recommends until age 5? I'm curious.

They are supposed to be on whole milk the 2nd year old (age 1 - age 2)for the fat intake for brain development and than doctors recommend that you switch to 2% milk at age 2.

What you are suffering from is generic advice. Most docs would recommend whole milk. However, because of problems with obesity and fast food, many are recommending 2%. I disagree with that. If you do not eat out and have a good diet that isn't high in fat, just stick with the whole milk until 5.
Consider this as well. Prior to the 90s, they recommended that children have whole milk until 18 because they need the fat for brain growth. THAT HAS NOT CHANGED! Kids didn't get overweight from milk, they got it from Cheetos and McDonald's and soda and lack of exercise.

Most doctors recommend the switch to 2% at about 2 years of age unless you have a child in need of the extra fat (i.e. one that has a problem gaining).

My doctor said to have my daughter drink whole milk until she was 2, then switch to 2%. They need the extra fat in the whole milk, but ask your doctor, it can also depend on your specific child, like their weight, etc.

My kids that drink milk now are 4 and 2, I still give them both whole milk. I haven't switched to 2% because my kids aren't fat, and they won't be fat because we do not eat junk. Just avoid feeding your kid crap and give them whole milk, my kids are perfect height and weight, nothing wrong with whole milk, it's just they are trying to cut down on over weight children by blaming milk, when in reality it's ho ho's and Mc Donalds.

The reason for the recommendation is for the higher fat content, and ~healthy~ fat is crucial to healthy bodies and brain development. However, I am not convinced that milk is the superfood that it is claimed to be. But if you are looking for healthy fats, give him avocados, nuts (unroasted nuts, and peanut butter, all natural like Adam's for example) or bananas as all of those are healthy, natural fats that will help his growth.
