The government constantly lies to us! Whine whine whine. Area 51 (Groom Lake, or the Tonopah Test Range) is a top secret research facility that the Air Force has whose primary purpose is to test experimental aircraft as well as analyze foreign military aircraft and their weapon systems.
If you have ever read anything about the Elite Aggressor Program (or CONSTANT PEG), you will see that the USAF had a number of communist russian built MiGs that it trained against. Obviously the government didn't want the world to know that it had gotten some of the enemy's aircraft, as that could lead to a political nightmare. The only portion still classified about this is where the US government acquired such aircraft.
Haha, you look on Google Maps and you can easily see the satellite imagery from the location. You just can't see what roads to take to get there, and if you do figure out how to get there you will never be able to get to the gate to the facility because the armed guards will stop you about 25 miles before you can even get there.
Go and watch your fictional X-Files and cry about saying the government lies. You don't need to know anything about it, and that is why you don't.

It's a military base and research facility. It would not be wise for the government to make such a place open to the public.
If you type in "Area 51" in Google Earth or Google Maps, you'll see Area 51. It's only grayed out in map mode since it's not accessible by public roads. Set a mapping program to satellite imagery and you'll see the buildings, runways, the lake, and everything else.

Actually you should check again, I looked at it just yesterday. You can see everything, but it doesn't matter, these photos have been around forever. I was interested in what was there and was able to find photos years ago. The runway is like the longest in the world for who knows what. This place is kinda like an iceberg. You only see the tip which looks huge, but I'm sure there is much more underneath. There are far more things out there that are more classified than this, once again area 51 itself is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to classified intel.

It is a secret research center for military warfare. The reason that our government doesn't want us to know what goes on inside is because there is alot of research that the world isn't ready for yet. As for the map of the area, well, it is pretty much under ground. you can't physically see it! But it's there.

what are you talking about on my version of Google Earth it shows Area 51 just time and it has alot of plane hangers and the biggest runway ive ever seen. which means they must be testing a aircraft that goes really really fast and needs alot of room to land. thats my best guess for that big @ss runway. as for everything else. the government does need its secrets. we cant have everyone in america know them because then our enemy would know them

And you think that there should be no top secret research unless you know all about it? Why do you think we lead the world with technology? But then suppose we gave guided tours of the stealth air crafts as they were being developed.
Wouldn't the world just love us.

Deep inside Area 51 is the alien spaceship from the Will Smith movie "Independence Day" where the adroid Commander Data from Star Trek TNG is the doctor who holds the keys to the "freak show."
Don't let anybody know. . .
The Truth is out there. . .
