I heard that Washington DC can be a dangerous place. If we don't want to stay in those expensive hotels, which area should avoid?

Avoid anything not in the NW quadrant west of 16th street. That means anything east of 16th street in NW and the entire NE, SE, and SW quadrants. Of course, feel free to visit attractions in any of those places during the day, but try to avoid staying there, and try not go go there at night. Don't be afraid though, it's likely nothing will happen to you, but it's best not to take any chances.

Your best bet for safe and affordable accomodations is Northern Virginia. Arlington/Alexandria areas are nice. Just be sure to pick a place close to the metro or that offers a shuttle to the metro that way you don't have to worry about how to get to/from DC.
I've stayed in Fairfax also, but I'm familiar with the area and know how to get around and to/from the metro and things I wanted to see.
If you really want to stay in DC, stick to the area around the National Mall or Georgetown. The mall pretty much rolls up the sidewalk at night, which is where Northern VA might be better for you - - things to do after the museums are closed.
Old Town Alexandria is a little pricey to stay, but if you get the chance, do go visit.

/ The expensive hotels are in the heart of DC near the White House. The safest place is in the Northwest (near Georgetown). The most dangerous area is the Southeast, but don't worry - there's nothing there for tourists, and no reason to go there.
