I just bought a 14" pizza stone. It works very well; my pizzas are nicely done. So I have complaint about how well it bakes crusts. But it does flood my house with an objectionable odor that lasts as long as the stone is hot. Will this eventually go away, or is it something I must tolerant whenever I use it? Any suggestions?

It shouldn't be making that stench at all. Just remember not to ever wash it with any type of detergent as the terracotta will absorb anything you put on it and it won't ever come out. Just rub the really caked on parts and rinse in cold or warm water. You could opt to soak it in water for about 30 minutes and then put it into your cold over and then turn it on and allow it to dry. This may help get rid of the odor.

Pizza Stone Smells

Did you save the receipt? You might want to return it to the store.

Do you clean it off properly after each use?

When you do clean it, what do you use? If you use dish detergent, maybe the residue of the soap is burning--that would smell nasty.

What is it made of?

Does the bad odor "transfer" to the food?

Is your oven completely clean--no burned on food from something else that might have spilled?

I would go back to the store where you purchased it and ask them; I used to sell pizza stones when they first appeared in the market (20 plus years ago) in a "gourmet store" and I never had a complaint about a bad odor when they get hot.

Oddly enough, I was thinking of getting one, but now I wonder if it is worth it if it stinks up the house...?!

Hmm... I'd say rub it down w/ oil and bake it at about 500ºF (w/ your vent on!) and see if ti's not just some kind of processing oil you can burn off of it.

I've always heard from the Pampered Chef girls to use the stone the first couple of times w/ a really greasy food to help season it, like L/O french fries or Grands biscuits. maybe try that.

It will go away. I just bought one for a friend and it did it for awhile.
