I'd go with the .45-70.

My reasons?

Brass is cheaper and easier to find.

You won't use as much powder, and you can get almost as much velocity from a .45-70 as you can with a .45-120.

On the other hand, you can actually use .45-70 ammo in your .45-120, but the accuracy will probably suffer due to the lengthened freebore.

BTW, I think you are lucky to have such a generous wife.

If you reload your own ammo by all means go for the 45-120! If memory serves me correct you can also shoot 45-90 thru it safely. If you don't reload, you can expect extremely high prices for ammo IF you can even find it!
If you do not reload, consider a 45-90, you can always shoot 45-70 thru it and save some money on ammo, and use the high priced 45-90 ammo for your serious shooting.
Consider also, the 45-70 was used for dozens of years as a buffalo gun in the "wild west" days of the USA's history. Even using the lower pressure black powder charges it was and still is a very capable large game round.
Any way you go, 45-120, 45-90 or 45-70 you can't go wrong, just the price of ammo and the availability is a concern.

A correction to Grey the caliber used in the movie was the .45-110 not the 120.
I would go with the .45-70 due simply to the available supply of ammo. Even if you do reload finding good brass may be difficult and expensive.

Absolutely beautiful rifle...But if you look at the bottom of Cabela's ad you will notice that it recommends you use only FACTORY loaded ammunition in this rifle..That might make finding ammunition for the 45-120 a bit tough.I would stick to the 45-70 (But just because of ammunition availability)....Good Luck

If you are going to go Quigley, get the one he used in the movie, the 45-120.
