Someone told me that if you take protein powder after a workout it'll turn into fat as opposed to taking it before a workout where you would gain muscle. Is that true? can you really get fatter?

That's nonsense. You will get fat if you drink those protein shakes and don't work out at all. Whether you take it before or after a workout doesnt matter. Your body will use it as fuel replenishment. Make sure that you limit those protein shakes drinks if you are already eating regularly cause you could pack on the pounds despite working out.
