When you measure flour you have to sift it first, well i don't really have a sifter so i'm wondering how much extra flour there usually is without sifting it first.

I'm not so sure there is no difference. Some recipes say to measure, AFTER sifting...lets see if anyone can tell us to be sure. It would be disastrous to ruin a recipe.

I've been baking for many years. I don't own a sifter. I thew it out ages ago. Don't waste your money on a sifter. They are a pain to clean.

Do buy a wire strainer. Hold it over a bowl. Dump your flour in it and shake. Lumps stay in the sifter. Wire strainers are available in most grocery stores and places like Walmart for well under $5.00.

It's hard to say exactly how much extra flour you'll have. That really depends on how you measure it. Don't scoop it out of the canister with a measuring cup because that compacts the flour. Spoon it into the measuring cup. Level it off with a knife. If you do it this way you'll be pretty close to where you'd be if you'd sifted the flour.

I never sift flour. Just make sure you put it in the measuring cup lightly and don't pack it down. Actually I like to buy the pre sifted stuff then I don't have to worry about it. I have never had a problem with lumps in the presifted flour. And I've used it for years.

Measure first, then sift. While it may say "presifted", I don't believe it because there are still lumps when you open a new bag of flour. And sifting makes for lighter, fluffier cookies, cakes, etc. etc.

Anymore, you don't have to sift flour. Read the bag; it's pre-sifted! Just fluff it up a little with your dry measuring cup before filing it and leveling it off.

None, sifting simply takes the lumps and bumps out of the flour and makes it smooth.

sifting is just for getting the lumps out of the flour, i dont think it changes how much there is.
