I removed 60 virus (?) threats off it with AVG anti virus and the boot up improved from 10 hours to 1 hr. So it appears to be a software problem. next thing I will try is Spy Bot for adware. I checked msconfig and don't see junk booting up there. Anything else I can do to fix this?

Wow! A pc that takes 1 hour to Boot!

please try to re-format your hard drive.. it is better to wipe-out all those things that slows down your pc. (seriously)

Also.. what are the specs in your computer... you might be using something like 64MB RAM.. Pentium 1.. (just kidding)

well after you erased the viruses and spy ware your pc should be fine. Usually after you erase lot of viruses and spy ware it some how effects the OS. Mostly it slows the OS down. Just re-install the OS for a fresh start.

you might have checked the startup tab on Msconfig.. check the Services tab.
I m sure you will find something there that is giving you an issue.

run your spybot search and destroy
download and run ccleaner , that will sort out the registery and any junk files left .
finally defrag the hard drive .
if this dosnt speed things considerably i would junk it and buy a new one ..
