And does it go through the xray? If so, will that damage the computer?

yes, it goes through the xray, but isn't harmed. you would prefer keeping it seperate from the carry on as you might be asked to turn it on, for security check reasons and you wouldn't want to be fiddling with twenty things then!

You can either keep it in a laptop bag or put it in your carry on, and you will have to remove it from your case or baggage and place it in a plastic bin to be x-rayed separately, most airlines allow one carry-on piece of luggage and one smaller personal item like a laptop or purse, and no, the x-ray will not damage your laptop whatsoever.

You have to have it as a Carry on or otherwise its Subject to being broken and or missing.
and you cant use it until the planes flight level is above 10,000 Feet AGL ( Above Ground Level ) Thats the FAA's Rules Smiles, LP
Their is nothing in the Laptop that should be damaged :)

I keep it in carry-on. I have never been asked to turn it on.

There may be a possibilty that it may retain x-rays.

One time should not be a problem.

If it is in your luggage, it may get damaged.

The TSA will ask you to put it in a seperate bin...... If you dont put it in a seperate bin {I have done this} they put you through additional screening!
