Catholics celebrate a time leading up to Christmas with Advent; the four Sundays prior to Christmas day, with weekly Masses that help prep the faithful by putting them in the proper spiritual perspective. Then, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the Church holds elaborate Masses celebrating the Birth of the Savior Jesus.

Secular customs in America include putting up and decorating a Christmas tree, decorating the house/yard with lights and other decorations, gathering with family for a Christmas Dinner and fellowship and exchanging gifts.

Little Children are regailed with tales of Santa Claus going from house to house delivering presents to them during the night while they sleep. While the character Santa Claus himself is a figment of imagination, he is based on a real-life Saint Nicholas who did a lot serving children in his day.

Twelve days after Christmas Day is known as the Epiphany or "little Christmas". It commemorates the three Wise men's arrival to the stables where they laid their eyes upon the Christ Child and worshiped Him.

The Catholics celebrate Mass - often at 4pm and 6 pm on Christmas Eve and then Midnight Mass, and more at 6am, 7:30am, 9 am, 10:30 am and noon time on Christmas day. Generally one of the churches in the diocese will have another mass at about 4 p.m. on Christmas Day. The churches are usually crowded and often they will have an overflow Mass in the church hall.

It is not Christmas until they sing "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" at the beginning of the Mass.

We are having a Christmas Sunday--probably an extended worship time, with some nativity activities for the children, and the final message on the nativity (the series has focused on the underlying messages of the nativity story--very interesting). Our decorations people will go overboard I'm sure and it will be very nice (we meet in a regular theater).

BTW, for the skeptics, we ask visitors NOT to donate to the collection plate.
