Use the technique called "total immersion", in which nobody understands your native tongue and you're forced to learn the local language. That shouldn't be hard in the U.S. because a lot of us only speak English.

Spend some time around English-speaking people with the flattest accents possible. That's the easiest way to understand the language. Try courses and don't give up.
