Grand theft - auto.
Regardless if he was "handed" the keys or not, the intent of the dealership was to allow your friend to "borrow" the vehicle for a short time, and then return the vehicle when finished with the test drive. Besides, as soon as the dealership reported the car stolen, then it is a stolen vehicle, since they are the rightful owners of the vehicle.

the definition of theft is to temporally or permanently deprive someone of there property and the theft of any vehicle is grand theft which is a felony. he should return the car know and hope if there was no damage done to the vehicle that the owner does not press charges. if there is damage he will be liable and he will eventually get caught

Now, I don't know what goes on in other states.
But with a good attorney, and no previous criminal record, he could possibly get probation for UUMV (unauthorized use of a motor vehicle) in Texas... That's all I can speak for...

Swindling is the crime committed by a person who test drive a car and never returned it. Imprisonment plus fines are the penalty when proven guilty of swindling.
