That's not entirely true.
Although many titles have been converted to DVD (even with extra bonus features), some of your favorites may not have been. Check around to see if you can find the videos that you like, because many on DVD are of better quality.
Also, burning the DVD's yourself is much cheaper than buying the new retail package. It's dollars vs. cents (+ time).
In addition to that, you can transfer your "customized" VHS tapes, such as TV recordings, camera footage etc., on to DVD.

DO NOT transfer you VHS tapes to DVD tapes. While the DVDs are 'excellent' that won't 'improve' the picture or sound when you play the DVDs and now there are HD-DVDs coming out that are even better. I do wish that SOMEONE would put out African Queen again on either DVD or HD-DVD ... I LOVE THAT MOVIE and would LOVE to OWN IT! My husband and I now own only about 1000 DVDs ... and we are getting an HDTV next year ... we can keep our old DVD player though, and buy a new HD-DVD player and start buying those (but not getting the movies we already own) ... it's a bummer, but technology is improving so rapidly now, that by the time we get the HD-DVD player, they'll probably have something else 'newer and better' coming out soon. DARN IT ALL ...

I am not sure what you mean by "mini-DVD camcorder microcassettes to DVDs" -"a lot of mini-DVD tapes" I assume that you are referring to mini DV tapes. The DV tapes are already digital and can be captured to your computer via firewire from your DV camcorder. The other stuff is analogue and can be captured using a Pinnacle "Dazzle" capturing device or something similar. You would hook up your VCR to the dazzle device to do this. Once the files are on your computer you can edit them as you like and then publish your projects to DVD. As for the compact VHS you had better use your internet skilsl to see if you can find a container to fit the cassetes and put it into your into your VHS so you can capture them as well.

I would just buy all the DVDs that were your favorites, instead of transferring your VHS Tapes to DVDs, yes DVDs are way better they have better quality than the VHS tapes that is true. Besides it will save you a lot of time and you'll have better quality for your money buying the DVD movies instead of transferring.

You will soon have the same problem when something better than dvd's come along. If your movies are that old then the chances are you can buy the dvd for a few dollars and get extra footage/deleted scenes/bloopers/cast interviews etc. I would definately agree that it is not worth it but if you love them so much then try buying them cheap on ebay or when a store has a clearance sale.

If you are happy with the version you have on VHS go ahead and transfer them it will be worth it. However, if you buy the newer version on DVD there are usually some extra bonus features that the VHS versions do not have. So you might want to check into those bonus features to see if you want them or not.

Of course the DVD version is better ..... but if you already have a movie in VHS, I think it's better to transfer it because it will cost less money than buying new DVD's .....
Only if you like a movie sooo much, buy the DVD!

Here is my recommendation.
Do some checking around. Copy the ones you love that you can't get on DVD. Also copy any Home movies onto DVD. Those obvously, are not replaceable. Replace the rest with new or used DVDs.

maybe, maybe not. There are some version of films that have not been released on DVD. The cost to transfer is trival - less than a buck per disk
