Well, I do it simply out of habit - I have a thing about being gramatically correct.
I don't think we ought to worry about this - the devil's name may be capitalized, but hey, JESUS is still the name above all names, right?

Satan is a proper noun.
Just like Hitler and Stalin and Saddam.
They are all bad guys, yet we capitalize their names.
We even capitalize the names of Senator Clinton and Kennedy.

Rules of grammar. The irony is the fact people put a capital g on the more evil of the two fictional characters in the bible and it is not a proper name.

It's grammer dear, you capitalize proper nouns. It das nothing to do with moral/ethical standing; Hitler, Stalin, David Koresh etc...

I usually capitalize all the letters because he is so evil, so I do "SATAN" just to emphasize the evil one.
