The complex and intricate nature of a single human cell never fails to amaze me, especially when I consider how many millions of them make up my body.

I think the scientific explanation of its behaviour and origin only enhances its wonder. After all, there is nothing more beautiful than the truth.

a rainbow....
yeah, it does. There is a legend (Not Noah) about why the oceans are blue: Keep reading, for it explains a rainbow as well. Long ago, the oceans were all clear. It was easy to fish! The poor fish were becoming endangered. So they went to the land and asked for help. The land could not do so, for to do that would muddy the water and make the fish sick. The forests and mountains could not help, either. Finally, a representative went to the blue sky. The sky agreed, but in return, the sky asked for some colors of the beautiful fish and ocean plants. The ocean agreed. Hence, THE RAINBOW!

Cool, huh?

The most awesome thing in nature is the opening of new life, such as a seed sprouting or an egg hatching.

As to the second part of your question, understanding how it works makes it more wondrous, for when you appreciate how it works, how you could never do it, that adds to the awe.

The clip linked below is of Richard Feynman, winner of the Nobel prize for physics in 1966, relating how the beauty of a flower in the eye of the artist does not necessarily exceed but might even pale to that flower's beauty in the eye of a physicist.

If I showed you the most awesome thing in nature Yahoo would send me a violation notice and I might get put on some sort of list that requires me to register each time that I move to a new district.

Weather.

And no, it doesn't take the awe away.

I think it sort of enhances it.

The most awesome thing in nature is that we, as part of it, can explain it.

The fact that all things are connected at the quantum level.
It adds to the awe by telling us where God resides.

Explaining it increases the awe.

Basking in ignorance does nothing for it. The mechanics of something like lightning is infinitely times more interesting and cool than grunting "Look! (whatever god of the culture) is angry!"

A lighting strike, and science just doesn't do it justice. Especially red and green lighting. But no it doesn't take away from it.
