I'm supposed to get an MRI done tomorrow, and I'm really scared. I'm like, SUPER claustraphobic and I don't want to do it. How enclosed do you really feel? How long does it take? Will I have to get an injection if they are trying to look at my back (scoliosis?)?

my mom works at the MRI center where here. they have an open scanner for claustrophobic people, and a closed one. you wont have to get an injection, or anything. basically all you do is lay in a tunnel like thing, and it spins around you. you just have to stay super still, and relax. It takes about a half hour, but if you move they have to restart. also dont wear any jewelry or magnetics.

If you have time before you have to arrive, call the referring physician (doctor that ordered the MRI) and tell him/her your concerns. Very often, the doctor prescribes medication to relax you if he/she is aware of this before the procedure. If you can't do this, you need to tell the technician as SOON as you get there. They may have to reschedule. I'm not sure, but I don't think MRI's are performed with enhancing medications (an injectable dye or isotopes to see "hot spots" or extra details). If they are looking at a long portion of your spine, it could take a while. It will seem like forever no matter what if you are claustrophobic.

They can give you a sedative to relax you. When they ask if you want one be sure to say yes.
