Wouldn't it be the most beautiful and elegant poetry imaginable? Wouldn't its divine authorship be obvious just from the quality of the text? Wouldn't it far surpass the greatest human poetry?

Now compare that ideal to the leaden prose of the Bible and Qu'ran. There are some works of poetry which instantly move anyone who reads them. When I read these 'holy' books, I'm often repulsed.

Your thoughts?

But if God had written the Bible or Qu'ran, its beauty should be evident to EVERYONE, not just believers, and it should transcend all human poetry.

However, I can reasonably claim that Matthew Arnold's 'Dover Beach' (for example) is more beautiful than any holy book.

The words of the little book of the Qu'ran are deadly when the meaning is digested. Therefore, there is no poetry just bitterness.

To me, this is pure poetry:

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

That's your own personal reaction/perception, and not an objective truth.

Personally I find Psalm 139 extremely moving. But I suppose if I was hellbent on taking offense at it, I could probably find a way.

Edit: but don't you see? I could quite reasonably also say that "Dover Beach" is less stirring than the King James bible - especially when one considers that despite not even being originally in English, the King James bible is considered one of the most important literary works of the English language, the equal of Shakespeare!

Who told you that the Bible was wrote with the intention of been a poetry book; however it contain some poetry; but the main intention is to let you know the way of salvation, not to entertain you.

I would think that if something was truly authored by "God", not only would it be an amazingly beautiful read, but it would not lend itself to any interpretation other than exactly what it means to say. There would be no opposing religions, and certainly no differing sects of the same religion. It would be clear as a bell to everyone, not just a chosen few.

I am not saying the bible is the work of god or not, but couldn't God write anything he/she/it/they wanted to?

Why the assumption of being perfect. If God created the universe and all in it, by using the logic that "If God makes something, it must be perfect ", then we would also have to be perfect and all the things in it. I am not perfect are you?

THis suggests that if God makes things , at least some of them are imprefect hence - the bible or parts of it or translations etc. can be less than perfect as well.

Well then...aren't you a bright star in the evening...

Hate to tell you this but the book of Psalms and the song of Solomon are just 2 of the most beautiful religious writings in the world....

If the bible repulses you...perhaps removing the shiit from your face would help your eyes see the true beauty of it...

God's Word can't be pretty to those who deny it. To the saved it is justification, but to the non-believer it is condemnation. Dwight L. Moody said it best, "God sends no one away empty except those who are full of themselves."
