and now it looks as if she has some red, irritated gum tissue. How common are gum infections during the teething process? Do you think we should call her vet?

Gum infections are not common during teething. Red gums are from teething. The bad breath is caused by the old blood in the mouth from the loss of teeth. It will be over and back to normal soon.

Gum infections are not very common but they DO cause very bad breath. During teething you will notice some redness but there shouldn't be much odor. Deffinitly take the kitty in and get some medical advice and probably some anti biotics.

I have raised many litters of kittens and have never had a kitten have a bad ordor in it's mouth. I would say there is something wrong! I would take the kitten in to the vet to get checked out because this does not sound natural to me.
Bad breath can be caused by other problems too.

A good oral care product at http://www.oramd.com/bad-breath.htm is now available for use for your favorite pets. Be an animal lover and get their mouth clean to show your love.

Yes, get her to the vet, asap! She could be starting to show signs of a disease.
