In my opinion, Army is the best route. Way more stuff and Army is a separate branch. Marines are part of the Navy and they are treated as second-class citizens and the ugly stepsisters. Plus former Marines, such as my platoon commander who did five years in the Corps as a USMC sergeant says the Army makes more sense. In peacetime, overseas assignments for the USMC are generally limited to Okinawa, Japan and U.S. embassies around the world as gate guards. And Navy boats in charge of the brig.

Coast Guard: you had better like small boats on choppy stormy seas rescuing drunken fisherman and stupid rich people who sail their 20 foot yachts into hurricanes. Brave people, but they put up with a lot of crap from the citizenry. You may be posted inland where you have a boat patrolling lakes for drunk college students with no life jackets and have no respect for the uniform. In the Coast Guard you can't shoot these people. In the Army, you are a trained rifleman who can put a tight four round shot group in a drunk's chest at 300 yards!!!! And you have grenade launchers, machine guns, and hand grenades to boot!

See your recruiters and contact your high school counselor and let them know what you want to do so they can help you set up appointments at the high school. In my day, recruiters were allowed on campus, and there were usually meetings where recruiters could gather students away from their classes and talk to them about joining the military.

actually, it is if you already have a college degree (4 yrs ) , not necessarily some college credits. join any branch which fits your needs. keep in mind, historically, the marines "go in first" to a war region. they get back up from the other forces. Coast Guard stays local unless the military needs to pull them out and place them in another armed force which is what has been happening with the Iraq situation. But few people are aware of that. good luck and thank you for being a patriot.

Bottom line up front- don't be in a rush to do anything.
Shop around- every service has a fairly complete website.
Try to speak with vets of any service you can find- take your time and speak with a few. Some will wish they had gone a different way in life, some will be proud of what they have done.
I am partial to the Army, so my opinion is slanted somewhat- lots of ways to be a Soldier.
Nearly every service is going overseas lately, and will be for the forseeable future. If this is a concern for you- find something else to do. If going to war is what you are looking forward to doing, ask yourself some hard questions. Are you anxious to serve, or anxious to kill someone? If you want to serve and will be satisfied wherever you are placed, be welcome! If you want to see what it feels like to kill someone- please find employment elsewhere. There are too many people like that all over the world.

The Marines do not give you more rank for education but I know the Army does. But it's not that much better you would be better off just to join and work for it.

Actually the marines do give you more rank for education. My husband was a sophomore in college when he went to MCRD San Diego for boot camp and he came out a PFC (E-2) instead of a private (E-1) - it puts you about six months ahead.

Well; to begin. Join Civil Air Patrol, (cap.gov). This will give you a great start no matter what branch you choose. If you want to become an officer than go to college; higher rank + higher pay; need a 4 years degree with ROTC unless you go to an academy. (air force academy cough cough).

you always get a better deal with education. get your college education try the marines and if its to hard or not what you want you can go straight into the army, air force or navy without doing boot camp over. and you keep your rank most of the time. Whats that tell you?

Don't even worry about it until you're 17 or so. By then you'll have changed your mind about 20 times.
