Can you spell global suicide? The next World War will involve a nuclear exchange, how could it not. In the first 30 minutes, nearly a billion people will have been vaporised, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. Another 1.5 billion will die shortly thereafter from radiation poisoning. The northern hemisphere will be plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity.
Eventually the nuclear winter will spread to the southern hemisphere and all plant life will die. You ask is the war in Iraq be WW3, you are asking when will we commit global suicide. My answer is it won't happen soon because the larger superpowers are more rational than the rump states in the middle east.

nuclear war is a war in which nuclear weapons are the primary weapon of choice. well the effect would be total distruction, right now there is an enough nuclear weapons stockpiled around the world to destroy all life on the world 30 times over, if people did survive the attack the fall out would cause cancer and birth defects. Japanese childre still have birth defects from the nuclear bombs dropped in WWII. there is no sure fire way to prevent a nuclear holocaust.

Nuclear war could be the closest thing to real hell.
The effect could very well be the end of mankind as we know it, and the earth could be made where no one could live due to the radiation.
Prevention? well, one way is for everyone to disarm and junk their nuclear weapons, which is something the United States and Israel would never consider, and also, for every nation in the world to stay home and mind their own business, another thing neither the US or Israel would consider, and past history proves just that.

nuclear war- a war where countries just blow up a bunch of stop using nuclear weapons killing millions of people
effect-nuclear winter, world war3, and of course, the end of the world.
to prevent it- nothing will stop the communist and dictated countries to use nuclear weapons (Iran, N. Korea) to stop making them unless they get a substantial leader, but I don't think a nuke will be landing anywhere anytime soon
