II have been under the care of my doctor for the last 6 years because of social anxiety, and severe panic attacks. I have tried several different medications over the years but i have not been able to hold a job for longer than 2 weeks and have also been hospitilized twice because of this. After talking to my doctor I have decided to apply for SSI not SSD. I don't have enough work history) and see what happens with that. I have a few questions that have been floating around in my head for the last day or so since deciding this so i though i would see if anyone on here could help answer :)

here is my situation. i am 28 years old and have a son that will soon be 2 and i live with my parents for the moment and i receive food stamps. is there anyone who has a similar situation that could maybe give me a idea on what i will recieve if i am approved? does having a child make a difference in how much that amount would be? i would so appreciate any answers :) but serious answer only plz tnx

If you are approved you will get an SSI check the amounts vary from state to state depending on the cost of living
The amount you get from SSI will be the standard amount for your state your child will not be considered unless your child gets a check from SSI. In NYS your food stamp benefits will be affected if you collect SSI because Public Assistance considers it family income where as other states don't count SSI as family income however I don't know if other states a adopted this policy I believe that the standard amount in NY is $638.00per month with a small increase coming in January 2008
You can also call

As far as qualifying for SSI you may want to visit the website
http://www.ssa.gov or http://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/12.00-MentalDisorders-Adult.htm
that can give you a fuller picture of the requirements
I hope that this helps

I'm not on SSI but I do keep up with politics and changes in law. I can tell you that as of 2004, SSI laws were changed to limit the amount recipients receive when awarded SSI.
This means that you are RATED by a percentage as to how disabled the hearing Judge believes you really are.
You practically have to be half dead to receive a full amount of money. It's usually about two thirds of a normal check for you.
So say the Judge says you are limited by about 50%. This means that you are still able to go out and get a job half of the time, and receive half of what you would normally receive in a check for the type of work that you do. Or less.
It has nothing to do with you having a child or the fact that you get food stamps.
SSI believes you are able bodied to work and hold down a full time job, especially at your age. They also believe that there are meds and other treatments that you could try that will help you become a productive member of society.

I also suffer the same disorder as yoo and cant work. I recieve ssi now, The process is long sometimes but worth the wait, try asking if you can apply for your son also because he is a minor under your care, Different state and different situation determine how much you will be awarded and you will geta cost of living increase each new year. Try applying for section 8 housing too, that dosent mean you have to live in the projects, thats a wait too but worth it. If you are approved for ssi you will be notified by an award letter and you will recieve payment from the day you applied. Tooo many determing factors to give you an idea about how much you will recieve. Good luck, and Merrry Christmas. If u want to email me and talk, put in another question under Health asking to speak to Lori.

yea.. i could also tell u u will probably get denied initially... and if u do get soemone from mental health to advocate.. "afreind" i know did ...

the social worker will fill out all the appeal forms and tell you all you need to know ... he will also be there with you at the social security office while you are there

also u are eligible for ssdi REGAURDLESS of workhistory..... if u have a disability which social anxiety ISSS for surrree............... u can get ssdi no problem... but i would advise getting a social worker to advocate for you because that is what they do for a living and they will MAKE SURE That u get the full amount of benefits including the extra 400 per month for the child .............soooooo good luck and God Bless
