The two good guide books that I always refer to before any trip is the Lets Go Guide and the Time Out Guide book. They give you the essentials of you need to know in a snap, which includes places for sightseeing, walks in the city, arts and culture in the city, good places to eat, places for nightlife etc. Both do have the New York City version and both are written by the insider point of view. I had read before both and I think both do have their uniqueness in it. (Lets Go geared more towards budget travel and Time Out is more for travelers in style).

There's no need to buy any books. Just stop by nycvisit.com Stop by their office for free maps and guides.
