Like the soda. I know it's a stupid question, but I was just wondering. If they can't, why?

Yes, I drink it.

While it is not a technical violation of the Word of Wisdom, Latter-day Saints are encouraged by Church leaders to avoid caffeinated drinks. It is believed that caffeine in large quantities, such as found in caffeinated soft drinks, is not good for the body and therefore violates the spirit of the Word of Wisdom. While many Latter-day Saints drink decaffeinated cola drinks, some people have suggested that we should avoid the empty calories of those beverages in favor of something more nutritious. It is well established that many people are overweight and yet also do not receive enough nutrition in their diets. The popularity of cola beverages has been linked to both problems in recent studies (See CNN Report on 2/15/01)

Big Bad Joseph Smith had a "revelation" that god didn't like alcohol, tobacco or "hot drinks." This last phrase has been interpreted as meaning tea and coffee.

Up until a few years ago, caffeinated soda fell into a grey area. Many Mormons drank it (I know a few who have no issues taking No-Doz) but some thought that the prohibition against tea and coffee was due to their caffeine content and extended their personal prohibition to caffeinated soda; as such, you never could get one at BYU. A couple years back, the current "prophet" declared that caffeinated soda was a no-no, too, but a lot of Mormons are addicted to caffeine and keep chugging.

In the family history center is a Coke machine. It contains Coca-Cola with and without caffeine. Some individuals have made an assumption that caffeine is the reason that coffee and tea are prohibited. This is not correct. Decaffinated coffee is not allowed, either. There are other acids in coffee and tea that are worse than caffeine. Put denture material in coffee or tea over night and see how stained they become.

When ever there is a function with sodas, it is usually root beer or sprite. This is because we know some would make a case about cola being unhealthy, and in fact it is. It is not, however, contrary to the letter of the commandments.

Yes, mormon people can drink coke. There is nothing that says we can't... I don't know where people come up with this stuff! Some mormon people choose on their own not to drink it because they don't want to ingest the caffiene, but it is not a "rule" that we can't drink coke. (or pepsi, or any other soda)

most observant Mormons don't drink cola or coffee because they both have caffeine, which is a stimulant. Mormons avoid all stimulants and addictive substances like caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, drugs, etc
