He wants me to tell him someTHING and i do not know what to say, which would be fine but now he won't tell me anything he wants. And I want to get him something special.?

Tell him to grow up. Yes he's sensitive about not having much money, and he doesn't want you drawing attention to it, but you don't want to ask for something from Tiffany's
So tell him to stop sulking, as why should you have to feel bad for causing him to use his money, when you are happy with his company. Tell him you don't need some macho show, and if it really bothers him, tell him to pull things around this year and make it up to you next Christmas.

If money's tight anyway, why not make "money" a non-issue by deciding to give each other "personal attention" gifts this year...massages, favorite meals, sitting attentively through a "chick flick"...things of that nature. Or you could even make things for each other. Anyone can spend money, but how deeply can you get into the challenge of really giving a gift from your heart? Good luck (there's still time to pull this off!)

It is difficult to not buy your girl something for Christmas when you wish to give a token of your love. I think you should just be honest with him and say that one day you will build a successful life together but for now all you want is his love. If he is still insecure with that which is understandable, then tell him you like costume jewelry. Its cheep and so various you should find something you like. Cheep perfume is also good and it eventually is used up so you can say that you finished it and when he wants to buy you more tell him you no longer like that fragrance.

Tell him you want a gift certificate to your favorite restaurant that way he can make his own dollar amount. Or tell him to make you a promise coupon book of things he'll promise to do in the future (example: go to the movies, free kiss/hug, take you out to dinner/ make you dinner). That will only work if he's creative/crafty. Good luck!

Ok then tell him you want a purse. Not an expensive purse, but just a black or brown or white purse thats not overly expensive. Or maybe tell him that you would need some sunglasses or some movie passes, then you can both go to the movies!

He shouldn't get mad because you just want to spend time with him. If he's a real Man, he would accept the fact that you are not materialistic. I would love it if a girl I was dating just wanted to spend time with me. If you want to get something special for him, get him a gift certificate from his favorite store.

Tell him "What part of 'I wanted a night with just him' does he not understand"?
If he's not capable of understanding THAT, or that he's making this so difficult for you, here's the second thing I would tell him: "Goodbye"!
