if you are speaking of an air-breathing engine, then the world record for speed was set by the u.s. sr-71 blackbird. it flew from an airbase here in the states to lackenheath a.b. in england in less than two hours. it set several others but its top speed was classified and still is. so the average public doesn't have a clue as to what it could actually do. the russians tried to counter it by sending mig-25's to intercept it at top speed which was around 2,000 mph or mach3 and it never got close enough for a missile shot. if i'm not mistaken the top speed that the sr-71 did that was actually recorded was right at 2100 or a little more. but what made that plane special was that the 2100 mph was its CRUISING speed and not its actual top speed. it could cover the state of montana in 12 minutes. bullets don't go that fast, and some surface to air missiles that were fired at it couldn't catch it. makes me wonder what the air force got to replace it. it was an awesome machine. now if your talking a rocket propelled jet, the x-15 set all kinds of records for speed. it was clocked at a whopping mach 5 which is around 3500 mph.

SFC Ollie is correct, but that is the fastest speed that was released. The SR-71 has flown much faster.

formally, the cost checklist is a million,806.964 (enable's say a million,807) mph over a distance of 3470 miles on Sep a million, 1974. The pilot grow to be Maj James V Sullivan and he grow to be flying a Lockheed SR-seventy one Blackbird. Edit to function . . . of direction, the quite real velocity flown by potential of the SR-seventy one continues to be labeled ;-) The quickest that the SR-seventy one is recorded at grow to be in 1976 at 2,188 mph at Beale AFB. @Stanly S . . . X-43A - of direction!!! Mach 9.8 (7,546 mph). besides the fact that, does it count extensive form if it is not manned, can't take off and would't land without suggestions?!?!?! ;-)

Olli told the recorded speed..It was set the day they retired the SR71. How fast it actually was/is is classified. They flew it fast enough to set a new world record, and no faster. I watched it take off and land at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa while stationed there with Marine Corps Base, Butler. We used to go to Kadena to sit for hours to watch for it...an awsome sight. especially taking off.
