I have witnessed that type of behavior. You know it's blackmail when it consists of a "need" or demand, or they threaten suicide. Commonly used in relationships... "if you leave me, I will kill myself." That kind of thing.

All you can do is not give in and allow yourself to be manipulated. Contact family, friends, or professionals about the person and let them handle it.

More often than not, someone who will really suicide tells no one.

Suicide is not something you can say is a joke or funny not even in a broken relationship. If you didn't have a feeling that you were being emotionally blackmailed you wouldn't have post this question. My aunt kept on saying that she was going to commit suicide, No one took it serious and one days after years of no one helping or trying to find help for her, she jump out of my Uncles Car traveling 100 km, she finally did it and everyone wondered WHY. WHY? BECAUSE NO ONE HELPED HER TOOK HER SERIOUS.

If someone tells you they are going to commit suicide tell them you are calling the police because you are not equipped to handle the situation. If they are faking it they will shut up or they will beg you not to call. If they are telling the truth the police/911 should be called anyway because they need help.
I've been in that situation too many times..... good luck.

Yep, I had a girlfriend in college who did this. Now a days, I don't have that problem, and I know people a little better. They want attention. If somebody were to threaten suicide on me, I'd call them on their bluff. And since most people aren't worth the attention, I strive to not associate with unstable people to begin with.

My Grandfather, he succeeded 2 yrs ago
How do I feel, well I wonder what it was that pushed him to make a rash decision like that, and why no one in the family was good enough to help shoulder some of the pain to help him through

it is a question that will survive the time of the lives that he affected

My daughter's boyfriend. He is a nice guy but when they broke up for a while he threatened suicide and now they are back together. It is sometimes effective, I guess.

Yes, don't want to go into specifics, they did not succeed. (several times)
Tell anyone who does that to you that you will not take the blame and direct them toward a mental health professional.

yea, my older brother. he's bipolar and manic depressive. we've been through YEARS of hard times with him. He threated to kill himself a couple of times. he chooses not to get the help the state offered him. he tells us that he is going to kill himself but he never does it. we know that his conditions are serious but he mostly does it for attention. which is horribly sad. if we don't give him want he wants...he tells us that he will kill himself.

all we can do is pray for him since he doesn't want to help himself.

I went to the police station and notified them, told his family, then completely cut off contact.
It's important that you tell someone, but it's not in your best interest to try and save them yourself.
