To be humble.

Too many people equate this with weakness.

Jesus was certainly not weak.'

After all, he threw the stallholders out of the temple.

It was righteous wrath.

Put the two opinions together and you have the complete answer.
First, the obvious teaching is one of humility and service.
Second, the more subtle teaching is one of being washed by the Savior of mankind. Only in and through Jesus can we be washed of our sins to return to the Father. When Jesus first offered to wash Peter's feet, Peter declined saying that he, Peter ought to be washing Jesus feet, not the other way around. Jesus gently rebuked him by stating that if Peter is not washed by the Savior, then he cannot enter into the Father's Kingdom. Thus rebuked, Peter said, not just my feet but my head and arms too. The washing was symbolic, not literal. We must be washed by the blood of the lamb, meaning Jesus sacrifice for us, in order to be forgiven and cleansed of sin.

Humility and service...and in my church we practice this before we take the symbols of flesh and blood which we call the Communion Service. Ordinance of Humility--we pair up with our spouses, or fellow brothers or sisters (unmarried have to be with same gender). I will wash someone else's feet, and they'll wash mine...we'll have a prayer and then we go up to the sanctuary to partake of the Communion.

I think, if I remember right - to show them that they are all equal in Gods eyes if they believe and follow. Jesus washed their feet to get them to quit putting him on a pedastal and to take what he was teaching them to heart - that everyone is equally deserving in Gods eyes.

To serve one another.

Washing the feet was the lowest thing you could ever do. It was reserved for your lowly servant or slave. That is why Peter was so shocked at Jesus doing this to him.

We are not to lord ourselves over our brethren. We are not to put on robes and expect them to kiss our rings. We are to come down below them in humility and wash their feet.

Matthew 23:11
But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.

royal racer - based on John 13:14, you are in error.
