To my knowledge, there is no set standard for being a true Christian. It is easy to sit in church and profess your faith. To me the best evidence of being a true Christian can be seen in their deeds on a daily basis. Their attempt to follow the teaching of Christ.

To answer your top question, that means that death strikes like a thief in the night. You don't know when it's going to happen nor do you expect it at the moment it does happen.
