This is a theological question, not an assumption that Jesus was more than a myth.

Look at Deuteronomy 13:1-5 and tell me how this does not apply to Jesus. He was trying to reform Judaism, and certainly teaching a different religious belief than what was presented in the Old testament, or there would be no "second covenant". Whether or not this is hidden with the claim that Jesus was talking about the same God, the difference is clear, and these verses say to kill such a person. No?

13:1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
13:2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
13:3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. "For the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul."
Does God know what is in everyone's heart?
Does God know everything?
13:4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.

13:5 And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.

That's right. Jesus was a false prophet and therefore subject to death according to Torah law. However, the Jews did not kill him, the Romans did.

P.S. If you would like to learn WHY Jesus was a false prophet, please see the following Jewish websites:

There is a theory that God's relationship with his people changes throughout the Bible. For instance, Job was the first prophet he directly went into discussion with. Jesus introduced a very mild God-concept, yet He also said He hadn't come to change the Law of God, that heaven and earth would end rather than one iota of the Law not getting fulfilled. Jesus also said that if someone trespassed against Him, that person could be forgiven... but someone who trespassed against the Holy Spirit of God would not.

The general Christian stance is that Jesus was not asking people to worship a new God or do anything against previous teachings, and therefore was not a false profit.

Your argument seems ok on the face of it but it is possible to have a second agreement with God which doesn't renege on the old one. E.g. parable of worker's payment.

It really is oh so simple:

If Jesus started anything, it was Reform Judaism; still Judaism, but more relaxed and more amenable to adapting to move with the times. But the core religion is the same.

There is no 'second covenant' belief for Jews. Abraham made an ETERNAL covenant with G-d. Do you really, really believe that G-d is that fickle, that unreliable, that contrary, that he suddenly turned round and revoked and reversed all of His own Laws???

Jesus lived and died a practising Jew. He never stated nor implied that Judaism was to be set aside, nor replaced, nor 'completed' nor 'fulfilled'. The new testament was written DECADES after his death and by people who never even met him - like Paul!

The Romans crucified Jesus. He was, to them, a political agitator. Given that the Jews were at that time TOTALLY at the mercy of the Romans, it makes no sense to state that they 'demanded' anyone be killed.

The Romans crucified hundreds of Jews, sometimes all in a single day. Jesus died because he was Jewish and because he irritated the Romans. Any other theory was introduced later, when Christianty was evolving into something very, very different, and into the faith we know today.

What this scripture is talking about is a persom who is using magikal arts to manipulate reality and say that his/ her diety is God based on those miraculous things. Jesus always pointed to the Father who he never denied. Remember, Jesus was a Jew in his human state and he followed Jewish religous custom and law. He participated in worship and sacrifice as the Jewish custom dictated. In all of this he broke no law given to them by God even though there were instances where he ignored mans tradition.
Jesus, time and time again proved himself to be not only sent of God but also God in the flesh as the prophet Isaiah foretold in Isaiah 9:6-7.
Also, when talking about those who see visions and do miraculous deeds God had a simple instruction about how to handle them...Exodus 22:18 "Do not suffer a witch to live.", period. There are other spiritual powers that will allow themselves to be controlled for the sake of turning us away from the one true God. The people who tap into these sources are led away from God and lead others away through the spectacle of what they see. God is not bound to prove His existance to us by miracles. In fact God says that miracles are signs that follow for those who believe (mark 16:17-18) In other words, Miracles are only an indication of the presence of the True God but not a requirement, If someone is saying they know God based on the signs alone then there may be a faulty teaching there.
Our faith is in the the Jesus who died and rose again and is coming back to judge the world. It is a statement of fact rather than a show that appeals to the senses.
The God of the bible is reliable so anyone who says anything contrary to it must be questioned.
It wasn't o.k. to kill Jesus in the sense that God looked foward to it; but, rather it was a mission that had to be completed because His love for us wouldn't permit us to die wihout an opportunity to get right with Him first. His sacrifice was the only way to pay the cost sin required.

Jesus' death was part of god's plan to buy back for us the right to again live without death.
Adam and Eve caused it
Genesis 2; 16,17
Jesus bough [ paid for] it back.
To fulfill God's promise.
(REVELATION 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

(MATTHEW 26:54) In that case, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that it must take place this way?”

Jesus was not trying to reform Judaism. He was fulfilling the requirements of the law. He is our prophet (proclaim er, not future teller), priest and King.

The New Covenant is actually the full expression of the covenant with Abraham.

Maybe you don't realize that the NT is the bridge from the OT? Religions that teach that the OT is just "history" are wrong.
