I think that is true to a degree, especially how you explained it. Though you start talking about something else later on. Saying put down and referencing to pop culture isn't sarcasm, well I guess put down can be. I agree that being truly witty and not having to always have a joke be at someone else's expense is a sort of "high-class" humor.Personally i hate stupid humor, thing that are so stupid that they are consider funny. I like tasteful humor. Interesting quote, I've never heard that expression before.

"Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit since its aim is to belittle or hurt someone, and to laugh at their expense; we associate the word "cutting" with it. On the other hand, true wit associates with the word "levity", and boosts everyone's spirits, being aimed at an action, a happening or an attitude."

Sarcasm can be devastating... but if the victims of a sarcastic remark cannot think of an equally witty comeback then they had better just shut up and walk away, they have been beaten.

Yes, I DO think the term was coined by some uncreative individual. Probably after losing an argument due to a witty put-down.

Clever, but I think it was actually coined by someone who was just fed up with sarcasm and was the butt of many jokes.

I thought the pun was the lowest form of wit. That's what I've always heard, anyway.

Of course. Good sarcasm takes intelligence

only in the eyes of the person being mocked. i personally find sarcasm to be a much higher form of wit. it requires a degree of intellect to see enough irony in a situation to be sarcastic about it. pisses off the stupid people which is also quite amusing.

have to admit i think sarcasm can be a wonderful tool-unfortunately it seems many just miss it completely and i have a feeling that the person whose quote that is has missed a bunch of sarcastic statements---just my thoughts smile and enjoy the night
