When Muslim men are taught how to properly beat their wives.....
When Muslim women are given more lashes by a higher court for being raped. Those that say that quoting Muslim judgments are one sided need to see the side that is for the woman....
When Muslim women are killed by their fathers for not dressing properly.....
I can't think of a better definition of oppressed.
AND if you think th quran gives more freedom than the Bible, then you are ignorant of the Bible.
Could you even imagine being able to walk down a street in a Muslim country dressed in shorts and a tank top and having Muslims accept you for who you are? If not, you are blessed not to live where Muslim laws are the laws of the land....or where crushing force is used for everything.
Hope this helps.
Edit: Because some men from England went on some crusade hundreds of years, why do the Muslims wanting me to use my brain not use theirs. You can go in any church and you will not see any tribute to these on the walls, in the literature, or from the pulpit. However, you can go into Muslim places of worship and find the suicide bombers being honored in their buildings, literature and their clergy.
So, it you are to claim that Muslims aren't oppressive, where are the Muslims protesting the actions of the radicals? Please note that my concern isn't because there are radicals because there are radicals in ALL communities. My concern is over the deafening silence of the "peace loving, good Muslims."
Since the "peace loving" Muslims will not speak out against their own, then what other option do non-Muslims have but to make up their own minds. So will you practice what you preach and become an infidel mentally for a minute and tell us what we are suppose to think when we hear:
1. "Muslim family beheads their own siblings and made the children watch their father and mother get their heads cut off for wearing "western style pants."
2. Muslims running TV shows teaching children Muslims customs, why it is important to become a suicide bomber, and having a person dressed like a Jew killing their version of Micky Mouse?
3. A high court upholding "Muslim law" by increasing the lashes to 200 that a raped woman was to receive.
4. A Muslim father in Canada kills his teenage daughter for not wearing a scarf.
5. Muslims killing and torturing people of other faiths.
Again, man's inhumanity to man is not the problem. The SILENCE of the "good" Muslims IS THE PROBLEM.
The fact that some Muslims are oppressive is not the problem. The fact that the "peaceful" Muslims are SILENT IS THE PROBLEM.
So your call for me not to believe CNN instead of protesting the "evil" people calling themselves Muslims IS THE PROBLEM!

Because whatever the Quran says, in extremist Muslim countries today muslim woman are routinely beaten for things like not wearing a hijab, being at the wrong place at the wrong time without a man, wearing to much makeup, etc.
Let's say that the Quran states that all woman should be treated with immense respect, honor, never should be beaten, etc. That has nothing to do with your question. You asked "Why do people think muslim girls are opressed?" Not "Why do people think Muslim girls are opressed as a proper expression of their religion?" Go to an extremist Muslim country, and the fact is that the women there are indeed opressed, regardless of what the Quran says.

I just got through taking a religious fundamentalism class and we had an entire section dedicated to fundamentalism in Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
I remember the Basij (moral police) of Iran commanded to beat men without beards and beat and even rape woman without hijabs.
The wearing of which is not even commanded in the Koran. It only started a few decades ago. My Proffessor is married to an Egyptian Muslim and his wife told him that she never wore it in school as a girl. And she came from an Orthodox Mosk.
I also remeber the CNN special God's Holy Warriors when a Muslim woman saying that if her daughter was raped she would be sad that her daughter had to be stoned but it was not her place to question the laws of God.
It was not spoken outof context, it was a straight two-minute interview with no cut-aways.
I have to say that I would rather live under the secular christian inspired government of America than the Sharia state of Islam.

People forget to realize women are opressed not just Muslims in general, like in China the footbinding, India performing the Sati, America boys are called pimps for being a player with girls but girls are called names doing the same with boys, and mutiliation isn't allowed, she has a right in marriage to enjoy being with her husband. These countries are holding onto pre-Islam beliefs, even in history books that I read women enjoyed more freedom but then it declined everywhere not just in the Muslim countries, and some nations react faster than others. People don't bother to read the pros and cons, just be one sided. There are things written in favor of women and not for them. I'm sure other holy texts praise women and sometimes lowers them.

Not all Muslim countries are that backward, but they still enforce these "rules" that supposedly come from the Qu'ran. The admonition to be modest translates into hijiab or burkha in some countries. I think Islam takes a hatred of women from the older Arab culture. BTW women in Saudi Arabia are NOT allowed to work in mixed areas, and there are managers but they are working "undercover" in secret areas in places such as banks.

Because of teachings like this:
10. A husband has sex with his wife, as a plow goes into a dirt field.
9. Husbands are a degree above their wives.
8. A male gets a double share of the inheritance over that of a female.
7. A woman’s testimony counts half of a man’s testimony.
6. A wife may remarry her ex-husband if and only if she marries another man, they have sex, and then this second man divorces her.
5. Slave-girls are sexual property for their male owners.
4. A man may be polygamous with up to four wives.
3. A Muslim polygamist may simply get rid of one of his undesirable wives.
2. Husbands may hit their wives even if the husbands merely fear highhandedness in their wives (quite apart from whether they actually are highhanded—as if domestic violence in any form is acceptable).
1. Mature men are allowed to marry prepubescent girls.

That's funny, last time I checked Muslim leaders has issued a ruling that any female who refused to wear the hijab should be put to death. Recently a woman was sentenced to 200 lashes because she was the *VICTIM* of a gang rape. It is routine in African Muslim nations to practice genital mutilation of females (without anesthesia) to make them unable to enjoy sex. Muslim women who 'choose' to date non-Mulsims are routinely butchered to death by their own fathers, who are praised rather than prosecuted for such atrocities. The Quran clearly defines women as the property of their husbands or male relatives.
Gee, why would anyone think you might be oppressed?

OK, but then what do you say to the women who do say they are oppressed? Call them a liar because they contradict you?
I have heard of some pitiful stories about how little girls are treated in North Africa. And there was a model that confess that was how she was treated as a little girl about 10 years ago.

The Qu'ran says it's a woman's choice to wear the hijab, but some Islamic nations require it as well as other measures we in the west find oppressive. The problem is we in the west are ignorant of Islam, and we can't discern between organic religious dogma and the laws of various nation-states. I made that mistake last week, and I apologize.

Because there is a media war against Islam in line with the wider neo-con plan for perpetual war between non-Muslims and Muslims
What is amazing is that in India and China MILLIONS of girls have been killed because of the preference for men leading to massive gender imbalances- yet we rarely every hear of this- but if a bad Muslim does something bad to a woman its worldwide news !!!
