Another one of Labour's headline-grabbers that will go nowhere as usual. The law already exists to deal with this, it's called dangerous driving and, as it stands, is entirely sufficient to deal with cases of people using mobiles, so all these idiots are doing is restating the law as it currently is, trying to make out that they;re getting tough on law, but we know it's all a farce and it's not about jail sentences. It's about raising more revenue through fines.
I do agree that using a mobile whilst driving is dangerous, but how exactly are they going to catch these people when they're spending billions of pounds on Northern Bank, whilst denying the Police a backdated pay award that would cost £30 million. They really don't have a clue!
If they're really serious they need to end this nonsense about Police pay, scrap the PCSOs, take out all the speed cameras, recruit more proper Police, cut all the red tape and get them out doing what people expect of them - catch bloody criminals and proper dangerous drivers and get them locked up! But why bother doing it the hard way when you can just criminalise the majority of the law-abiding public who the Government view as a soft-touch.

Reference to the Jail sentence is media hype although the government could use such a sentence as a maximum it is most unlikly the courts would send a person to jail under the circumstances. But really a Mobile used in a vehicle creates a distraction even though it may be hands free.So does a discussion with passengers or perhaps just listening to the radio and so on.Wonder if these rules will apply to Santa he is on his way cos he rang me on his mobile.

Why do campaingers tarnish all with the same brush. Not everyone is dangerous whilst driving using the phone. Is it because they lack common sense? You can't dismiss the possibly that some ppl might have the skills to do that.
Also, is it dangerous to drive past a school at 2 am or 3.30 pm whilst on the phone or eating a sandwich etc.. Campaingers would so "both" but common sense would say 3.30 pm.
Blame the idiots that vote Labour.

How ridiculous! Especially if a lot of those weren't on the phone at all, like NewGran earlier this week - she got "caught" by two officers who swear blind she was using her phone when she wasn't - so, now we have non-existent offences to go with non-existent cells!
And as for what they should really be getting tougher on - did you hear about that guy they let out after he got a life sentence for murder? He went straight out and raped a girl. Life should mean life, not a holiday.

OH!! it got sillier than that. did you catch the bit about prosicuting on the potential!! of using your mobile while driving? ....they were saying that they will take into consideration what could!! have happened when sentencing.....i nearly sprayed my coffie every where. that means you can have what didnt happen taken into consideration.....so if i walk up the high road pass the bank, even if i dont go in and rob it. i could have done, so i can be punnished on the possibility???? HA HA you couldnt write this stuff could you. F*cking labour party have completely lost the plot. i swear its these silly women that labour employ's simply to get the gender ballence right that is causing most of this crazzy stuff. perhaps its time for them to think about employing people who can actualy get through a single day with out making an @rse of them selves.

AH - The good old British motorist. A real soft touch and an easy conviction to get the figures up. Ask any copper. It's called a "moving traffic offence"

It's funny in this country, I mean you can murder/rape and generally be anti-social and be let off or let out early, but try and defraud the Government, fail to pay your TV License or text on your phone at a red light and you are banged up for a long time?
But hey this is Britian afterall, are we even suprised with these bunch of Turkeys anymore? I aint.
It won't be long until it's a crime to be happy, actually that is sadly already a crime in this country.

If you idiots had ever worked on an ambulance called to crash scenes you would not be so casual about this. The statement by the Government, supported by ACPO, RAC, AA, MIRA and BSM, has had a high profile presentation so that there is a chance of the thick-o's hearing about it. Speaking for myself, having had too many people die on me at crash scenes, if I saw someone using a mobile while driving, I would pull them up and put a bullet in their heads, before they kill someone else. As to die laughing, I've never had that happen in a crash, mostly they die in great pain and scared out of their wits, crying and calling for loved ones. Grow up and behave responsibly. Switch your phone off if you are going to drive. This is NOT a party political issue, this is about adults acting like adults.

My daughter had to be cut from her car and could easily have been killed by some cretin using a mobile 'phone. I think if people are caught using 'phones should face a HEAVY fine rather than be jailed. If they cause a fatal accident then a spell in jail should be inevitable.

Hi
Never let it be said...us Brits don't have a sense of humour eh.
I think the obvious answer to that is...on your way to court, murder someone you'll be guaranteed a lighter sentence or maybe even let off.
