Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.
Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.
It won't be a Hollywood movie style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.
Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.
Really good website for more information here:

Lots of numerical scientific data proving it real here:

Proof that most scientists think it's real and mostly caused by us here:

First realize that global warming is a natural cycle of the solar system and that man has virtually no input into that cycle except to try to adapt to it. Research the area, paying attention to scientific studies and NOT consensus papers. Pay particular attention to the fact that the earth has not warmed even a part of a degree in the last 10 years and the ice on both poles are normal for this time of year except they are freezing faster than the norm.

1) Start off with an intro for people who aint aware of the situation> Give them the causes and effects.
2) How it will effect our way of life, as well as the life of animals, and our climate (seasons, and storm patterns)
3)What we could do to yield the process

You certainly have to start off by saying the theory is disputed. The number of skeptical scientists is growing. Even the Washington Post admits this.

Here is good one to try. The junk science and the supporting science. I have never heard it done that way that would be refreshing for sure.
