Actually, jealousy and envy aren't quite the same thing. Jealousy involves possessiveness and/or a feeling that one's emotional rights are being violated. It's what a young child may feel toward a new sibling or what someone of any age may feel toward a person who appears to be drawing off the affection of one's significant other. It's also what an employee may feel when someone with less seniority is promoted over him.

Envy, on the other hand, involves wishing for something someone else has, to the extent of begrudging that person his possession or enjoyment of it. Enjoying the misfortune of someone who seemed to have everything is envy. A child who deliberately breaks another's toy may be experiencing envy--if he can't have one, why should the other child get to?

Of course, both words are often used lightly to pay a kind of compliment. A plump girl may say to a slimmer one, "Oh, I envy your figure!" but it's not really envy if she wouldn't be glad to see the other girl get fat. It's more closely related to the idea that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. You'll hav to ask yourself whether the people who are said to envy you actually resent whatever you have or whether they just wish they had something like it--not exactly the same.
