I would think that there would be more incidents of it considering the worlds population, but as much as the scientist know about the human body they still don't know everything. The other thing is there is still groups of people that do not or choose not to have a lot of communications with others. Many are superstitious about unnatural phenomena and would hide the fact it happened. I'd not be surprised if it were true, but there are a lot of things I wouldn't be surprised to learn they also are true.
Happy Holidays

Once a long time ago I actually talked to a scientist who was investigating it. There was a teenage girl around here that was found burned up on the side of the road, but her shoes were still on her feet and such. Anyway, he said that his belief based on investigation is that it is usually caused by a massive buildup of static electricity that causes something like a mini lightening strike. Then the person smolders for awhile with the body fat feeding the fire, but body fluids eventually put it out. In the case of the girl on the side of the road, he believed it was an actual lightening strike that caused it. It all made sense to me, so I think I will go with that explanation.. static electricity or lightening strike.

It's caused when someone collapses or dies and their clothing catches fire, especially cotton clothing. It acts like a candle wick, and slowly melts the body fat at extremely high temperatures - but with little radiation, which is why there is little damage around the bodies but the body itself is almost completely consumed. It's been tested on a pig carcase. It takes 20-30 hours to burn to ash, but there is almost nothing left. It's why those photos just show a pair of legs sticking out of a fireplace.

The latest theory I have heard of is that it happens when the person has fallen in a drugged sleep or they are knocked unconscious , wearing cotton clothing and smoking or has a open flame nearby. The cigarette falls on the clothes and they burn drawing the fat from the body the whole thing burns like a candle burns drawing more fat from the body and burning it until the body is consumed .

They have done studies disproving this phenomenon. The instances are usually people with high fat content (very flammable) carelessly smoking and falling asleep, or falling asleep near flame or high heat. Ick, huh ?
