The things we want most in life are always "Forbidden-Fruit", weather that be lover, chocolate, etc.
When someone says you can't have this or that, don't you pursue it, at least sub-conciously, all the more.
I forbid you! To pick me as 'Best Answer"!

I don't think it means that love is unattainable. Rather, the point is that at seventeen you might think that the unattainable object of your (immature) love somehow seems like the thing most worth having.
Once you gain more maturity, you find out that this is an illusion. The fact that something is unattainable doesn't automatically make it better. (Just the opposite.)

I personally think it is saying that his love was unattainable. That being with him is something she thought she could never have. That sometimes the best things in life are the things that you are told you're not supposed to have or can't have.

It means that there is extra interest in something unattainable. If you can't get the boy you want, you want him all the more. If he is married, you want him even more. So I went and fell for a married man!

What it is saying is simply this:
Although attained by most people, love is irreconcilable in the eyes of others, and unattainable by those we admire most in life.

Generally, the harder something is to attain or obtain, the more we value it. I'd hate for anyone to go through life NEVER getting the things that mattered most to him, but Don Quixote would probably understand--think of "The Impossible Dream."
