It depends where you live. See in Canada if the cops are called to a domestic dispute they have to lay charges. Have your parents called the police? if they have it's in the hands of the district/crown attorney and he/she makes the decision as to whether to prosecute or not prosecute the case. I can give you a detailed answer but you haven't stated whether you live with your parents or are over the legal age, those things will factor in to this.

Okay, first of all, what did he do?! You're question was confusing, and by the sound of it, I got the impression that your boyfriend hit you, you don't want to press charges, but your parents want him punished. I'm not an expert at law, but I think if you're a minor, your parents have the right to press charges against him for harming you. No one deserves to get hurt like that, so if I were you, I'd be trying to get his butt in jail....He DOES NOT have ANY right to hit you. Your parents don't have any power to arrest him, but since they got the police involved, they can. He could get in trouble, but you really shouldn't care about that. Good luck!!

well it actually depends on how old you are if you are under the age of 18 then yes they can but if he denies it and so do you it is he say she say. But if your over the age of 18 and you don't press charges then there is nothing the police can do except fro give him a warning. I mean if he is beating you then you should press charges, so he cant hurt you anymore, or you can try and work it out and see where things go. Its really all up to you.

If he's in their home and they think he poses a risk, or if they have reason to think he did or will harm you, they have every right to have him arrested. It's impossible to say without knowing the details, and you've provided more of an emotional rant than a coherent story here. All things being equal I'd put more trust in the people who brought you into the world and have been looking after your well-being all these year; than the person whose main interest is sticking his d*ck in you.

A better question is: If he did hit you, why are you protecting him? He has done nothing to earn your loyalty, and such carelessness could cost you your life.

I'm with your parents on this...you're young and love the guy...you're their daughter and they are doing the right thing by calling the cops....guys like this don't stop the abuse...your parents are older and wiser and I'm sure heard so many stories as I have about women in general getting killed because some jerk wanted to teach their wife or gf a lesson..this guy is for sure a coward and a loser...have more respect for yourself and get away from him before the next hit takes your life...the best of luck to you and family...

Any citizen has the right (and some would say the responsibility) to report a crime. In many states the victim does not need to be involved in the process as the DA is the one that presses charges.

It sounds as if he hit you.

DUMP HIM NOW......end of story.
By the way I'm a man and you never ever lift you hands to a woman no matter how much the man is provoked.

And if he has hit you, your parents were 100% right to call the police.

Again if he did hit you and you were my daughter its not the police I would have called it would have been an ambulance to take the coward to HOSPITAL after I had finnished with him.

Edit: after reading the details more closely, I wanted to change my answer. He hit you. You are obviously not mature enough to take care of this yourself, and since you are a minor, you are lucky that you have parents to help you out. They have the right to press charges on your behalf, and they should. I hope Jason learns his lesson, and you realize that you deserve better.

Depends on age and state. If you don't press charges the prosecuting attorney can still press their own charges because it is illegal. If you are a minor it is a different story. I won't preach to you but I have been in a lot of situations that were no good and you are being a typical domestic violence victim. F him and the bad boy horse he THOUGHT he rode in on. He's lucky I'm not your mother.

Yes they can press charges since you are a minor.....more importantly there is no such thing as working things out....if he is physically abusive to you it wont change....he'll come to you crying, asking for another chance, promising to never do it again.....things will be OK for a while...a few months from now he'll hit you again, he'll say the same things again...and on and on and on....I am thrilled your parents are pushing the issue...there are tons of great guys out there that would treat you the way you deserve to be treated.
