As others have explained, at Christmas fruit mince pies are often served. Originally from England/Scotland, they are made of a short crust pastry and contain the fruit mince. My grandmother used to make her mince earlier in the year. It was preserved in glass jars, like conserve, etc, and kept really well as it contained alcohol. I like them better warmed in the oven and served with either brandy cream, custard or regular cream.
In Australia, we eat a lot of savoury pies, more commonly known as meat pies, which are often made with real mince.
They are great with tomato sauce (substitute ketchup) and are an iconic Aussie treat. You can even buy frozen packs in supermarkets.
I've only seen one shop making and selling them in the USA - the "Aussie Pie Shop", in Seattle, but they were closed when I was last there!

They are made of a short crust pastry and contain dried fruit and suet (the fat from around the kidney, although now you can get vegetarian suet). Many years ago, they were meat and spiced to cover up the fact the meat was going off. Now the only meat product is the suet. I make my mince earlier in the year and after mixing the fruit and suet i put in loads of brandy. I then preserve it in glass jars, the brandy gives it a long shelf life. I like them better warmed in the oven and served with clotted cream.

Mincemeat pie has meat in it which was originaly made as a way to preserve meat without using salt and smoke.

It is an aquired taste.

Mince does not have to contain meat and is more of the vegetarian counterpart to mincemeat.

They contain raisins, currants, sultanas, orange and lemon rind, almonds, nutmeg and spices and can be served hot or called with cream or custard. Personally, I don't like them. I prefer a nice yule chocolate log or other dessert. If you like christmas pudding, you're more likely to like mince pies. I think much of the time people eat them because it's traditional rather than because they love the taste. Try for yourself and see. Maybe just buy one from a bakery rather than a box.

The mincemeat filling was a finely chopped, cooked mixture including raisins, currants, apples, **suet**, sugar, spice, and **often meat**, brandy or cider, candied peel, and other ingredients.

My 2 cookbooks have no Meat..and the suet has been replaced with butter..
YES it is so sweet I can only do 1/2 a slice and narrow please.
