If his girl friend is Russian and he is Russian, won't she know? I would offer her the ring and let her put it on the correct finger or do a search online if it's really important to him to do it correctly.

Russian Wedding Rings

Recently I found out that a lot of women opt-out to having an engagement ring because they don't feel spending the money is worth it. So if you chose not to get one, you wouldn't be alone. But if you do want one there are tons of ring designs to look at. If you're not already engaged (obviously without a ring) or if you and your S/O are planning on being engaged soon maybe talk to him and let him know what you want. When my boyfriend and I get engaged hes going to take me ring shopping with him. I know its not the most traditional of routes but then both of you are happy with whats purchased. The main reason why I'm going is because we've already talked about when the engagement is going to happen (so its not like I'm going to be really shocked lol) and also because I don't want my boyfriend to over spend on my ring. When the time of your engagement comes closer tell your S/O your thoughts and see if you guys can go together.

Russians don't wear engagement rings. Usually the couple just decides to get married, and they go and apply for the marriage registration appointment right away. There's no ring involved, and there really isn't even a word to describe what in the US is known as "engagement". During the marriage ceremony, the couple exchanges wedding bands (plain gold bands with no stones), and these are worn on the ring finger of the right hand.

Check out this article, it describes Russian engagement and wedding traditions pretty accurately:

Traditionally, there is no engagement. No rings are given; no one is informed about the event excepting closest friends and family. Russians call "engagement rings" the rings that the couple exchanges during the wedding ceremony. Russian engagement rings are in reality just plain wedding bands of gold, without diamonds or stones, and they wear them on the RIGHT hand on the finger next to the "pinky". (An "engagement ring" on the LEFT hand on the same finger will mean for Russians that the person is divorced or widowed, i.e. is not currently married but was married before.)

As far as I know, this whole "getting engaged with a diamond ring" is a Western tradition. I've never heard of a Russian wearing an engagement ring unless she was engaged here in the US. It's possible that now the Russians are borrowing western traditions more and more - in this case, they would possibly be mimicking the tradition of wearing the engagement ring on their left hand. The wedding bands are worn on the right.
