Green tea has a chemical in it that attaches itself to the proteins in cancer that cause over-growth. Much of the problem with cancer is that it has a lot of these proteins, and grows out of control, creating what we know as tumors.

The current thinking says that green tea can be a good cancer-fighting agent, as it will attach to these proteins, stopping them from growing as they do. The only real problem is that we haven't figured out how much green tea a human would need to ward off cancer, or even to slow it down. Basically, the dosage hasn't been fine-tuned.

Certainly, it shouldn't be bad for you, and could help you avoid cancer...it's just not provable at this point.

All true teas contain antioxidants, which may help prevent cancer. They may also help your body fight infections. Tea may also help prevent Type 2 diabetes. The fluoride in it fights cavities, too. Green tea is the most studied type, but oolong's effects are probably similar. It may have less antioxidants since it is more processed. Red tea and white tea have even more antioxidants.

Tea may contribute to kidney stone formation, though drinking plenty of water and getting enough calcium in your diet may mitigate this. It also stains your teeth, though this is a cosmetic effect. Taking in too much caffeine can raise one's blood pressure, though you'd have to drink a lot of tea for this to become a problem.

Like some other posters said, green tea is good because of the antitoxiants. Green tea has also been proven to help out with sore throats, colds, etc.
