I was homesick for about 5 seconds. Basic training is not at Sheppard though. Everything is done at Lackland AFB in San Antonio.
Everyone around you will be young also. This is the perfect time to start bonding with your new brothers and sisters. The great thing about the military is that we all look out for one another. If you need something I am sure someone will be there to help you out. Being away from home will be the last thing on your mind, since you will probably be very busy most of the day.
Good luck on your decision.

You'll be just fine. I used to be stationed at Sheppard AFB for ACLS tech school and it wasn't that bad. You'll have plenty of friends to share all of your anxieties with. And hell, it's a lot warmer than Michigan. As far as you being so young . . . well you have to grow up at some point. Better now then later.

Good thing you signed on as airforce...you travel a heck of a lot more in the army and marines....ummm...it takes a while...you just need to get over the inital hump of being gone and somewhere new, but you'll meet friends and people and you'll most likely love it.

What does any of that have to do with Sheppard AFB? In Army basic, I didn't have much time to think about being homesick. And I was well over it before I got anywhere else.

Your first stop will be Lackland AFB - Basic; your next stop will be wherever your Tech school is; then your duty station.
For about a year, training and acclimating to your life, you will be too busy to get very homesick, maybe a little, but not much.
It's a great life, you will be fine!

Go to college instead. Chances are in four years when you have an education you won't even want to join the military.
