Some people just have a gag reflex that is too sensitive. I am one such person.

Here is how I've dealt with my gag reflex. There may be other ways to deal with it, and these ideas may not work for you, but they might help.

1. Don't brush your tongue. :) I use mouthwash instead.
2. Using an electric toothbrush is more comfortable for me than using a traditional toothbrush.
3. Visit the dentist toward the end of the day. Gag reflexes are usually at their worst in the morning.

There is no way I will ever be able to brush my tongue, so I don't. The mouthwash does the job and helps with bacteria in the gums, too.

I'm surprised you have a gag reflex when brushing your tongue. Gag reflexes are usually triggered by pushing on the soft palate. Try sticking your tongue way out of your head while brushing it.

a gag reflex is a protective mechanism, you don't want to make it lessen, it protects your airway. as for gagging on your tooth brush, you are just reaching too far back with it, suggest you get a tongue scraper, they make them for just that purpose.
