I was petting my overweight cat last night and noticed a strange clump in his fur. Although he is a short haired cat he sometimes gets mats at the base of his tail, which I believe is because he can't reach the area to groom. I assumed that's what this was, but it turned out to be covering thick yellowish pus. I cleaned the area with anitbacterial soap and water, and found a strange circular wound, that appears to be a puncture. It is too wide to be a bite mark from a cat tooth. The wound is about 1/4" in diameter. I've been washing it and applying neosporin daily. Can anything else be done? What would have caused this wound? He is an indoor only cat, but is exposed to cats that go outside.

If this wound has been there for awhile, before you noticed it, it could have started out a lot smaller, and got bigger with the infection. He really should have a vet check, and antibiotics. However, I have cleaned and doctored puncture wounds with an astrigent salve made for animals, called....Nolvasan. It comes as an ointment (tube), salve (jar), or infusion (practically liquid in a tube w/"nozzle" on it. That one works the best, if the puncture is very deep. Ask you vet about it. I've used it for dogs, cats, and horses!! Hope this is of some help....Good luck.......ps: you really should put your cat on a diet.....being that overweight is not good for his heart, among other things!........

Might have been an abcess. If he had a bite from another cat the bite might have abcessed and the abcess broke. They can look really bad, but they are usually not very deep. Using Neosporin is okay, but if the infection is stystemic he will need an antibiotic. I'd be careful because systemic infections can make a cat real sick real fast. Keep a real close eye on him and if it isn't a lot better in a day or so take him to the vet.

If the wound is healing then carry on what your doing but if not take him to see a vet. The wound could of been done by him getting caught in something as it doesnt look like a bite wound the other most likely thing is humans being cruel.

Unless the infection was localized, he might need an oral antibiotic. I think you should take him to the vet, but if he's acting normal -- eating well, not hiding or acting sick -- then you are probably safe in continuing what you've been doing for him.

A vet will give you medication and make sure it isn't infected, which it sounds like it is. He needs antibiotics.
