Nobody can say for certain what will happen then.
Try not to get your knickers in a twist worrying about it. I doubt humans will be around in 4,000,000,000 years when that happens.

With due respect that is bit cheeky - You will note this section of Yahoo Questions is called 'Religion & Spirituality' and yet you want to set parameters for our answers that exclude the very thing upon which for many their religious faith and spiritual experience is based - The Bible?
What would a 'legimate reply be based upon I wonder? What would make it valid - the thoughts of man or the thoughts of God?
Do you not think it is somewhat arrogant to suggest that anything formulated upon the Word of God is any less valid than the influences that you would involve in your formulation?
So to the answer, having reasoned and considered for many years I would be inclined to agree with the writer who said: 'The fool says in his heart there is no God'. It was a much better one than myself who said: 'Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me if you have understanding'. But a more recent writer might describe your picture better: 'Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken' - But as regards timing he choses not to guess: 'But of that day and hour no one knows, no not even the angels in heaven....' but it is okay because apparently his father knows! How will it all end up? A guy wrote about a dream/vision he had and I would take much store from it: 'And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea' I can send you the book if you like? Gets quite exciting as it deals with the redevelopment of Jerusalem......
Sorry if I have broken the rules but come on bro' get serious, if it's not in God's hands then God help us......and if you don't have a god you better help yourself!

The human race will cease to exist long before the Sun turns to a supernova or a red giant. Mankind will probably be exterminated within the next one hundred years by a mutant viral infection which will spread rapidly throughout the globe, after which the planet will restore itself over several million years.

Ok you want an answer on wether we will go to heaven, but we cant quote the Bible.
You want to know if theres another place we will end up, do you mean after we are dead? Do atheists believe in an afterlife?
There will be no human race when the sun goes white dwarf, rather than supernova, after its red gianted, we will be well and truly dead. we will not continue. none of us. so the question itself is a bit of a no brainer.
Atheists tsk! (Thats a joke by the way, the tsk)

The human race has so far existed for less than a million years. Indeed life on earth has only existed for 3.7 billion years and placental mammals have only existed 125 million years.
So in four billion years from now chances are the human race will either be extinct, or will have long ago evolved into something different.

I'm Hindu and believe in the process of reincarnation (of souls) and the pantheon of Gods consisting of Brahma (the Creator), Vishnu (the Sustainer) and Shiva (the Destroyer). You'll be amazed to learn that ancient Indian scriptures had a strong notion of the very concept you described in this question - yes, it is believed that all material things (matter, energy, atoms, molecules, human beings) etc. constantly undergo a process of creation, development, destruction and then...Regeneration.
Hindu scriptures actually have a time unit called "Kalpa" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalpa_%28time_unit%29 which roughly equates to 16 billion years (Keep in mind Ancient India was the place where decimal system of numbers were first used, so large multiples of 10 were common back then).
According to Big Bang theorists, the entire Universe as we know today is approximately 12-13 billion years old so when you add the 4 billion years, you roughly arrive at a cosmic cycle of destruction and later, regeneration.
Also according to my personal beliefs, "everything is preplanned". I do believe in what Christian countries call "Intelligent Design". Even higher level Physics theorists and Quantum Physics experts believe in its possibility.

1) the sun wont go supernova it isn't nearly massive enough. red giant yes but supernova no.
2)4 billion years from now is to far off to plan anything. no one can predict the future. we are currently looking for planets that have the capability for supporting life but whether or not that will be worthwhile we have to wait. in short, its 4 billion years from now, we dont care at the moment.

Well, if I can't quote the bible, then I will have to rely on the so called theory of evolution. In 4 billion years, humans will not be humans. We will evolve into something that is different. Something that does not require sun light. Either way, you and I won't have it to worry about.

Christian answer: Our almighty God is into creation big time - everything is changing all around us and perhaps as you say, the earth will be toast one day, but perhaps not. Initially heaven will be terrestrial here on earth with Jesus after he returns. God who made the universe and stretched it out with his fingers is able to sort the Sun out whenever it gets short of Hydrogen, or he could re-create everything, as indeed it is written that he will. Either way, my hope and trust is in him and I believe things will work out. Wherever he is, I very much want to be also.

I reckon we would have been able to travel to other worlds by then. That is, if the human race still exists.
I think the chances of a meteor/comet hitting the Earth before then is far more likely to wipe out humanity.
