Yes it can. But it is a flexible rubber compound and shoudl come out when you brush and floss without much trouble.

There are a lot of different impression materials used. For study models usually alginate is used--a fairly soft-rubbery substance that sets up in a minute or two and is based on an extract of seaweed. It is tough to imagine the tray getting stuck in your mouth, though when I was a first year dental student another student almost couldn't get the tray out of my mouth. Problem was I had one tooth that stuck out and he was pulling the tray out so that the edge was against the tooth.
Unless you are being worked on by an inept clumsy first year dental student you should be alright!
There are other materials used as well, and back in the day I sometimes used impression plaster. That occasionally was tough--but no one's going to use that stuff on you!

The dentist didn't ask me to take my lip ring out during it so the mould totally got stuck to my lip ring. Ooohhh novacaine didn't work to get that sucker out!
